Mayor Atkinson acknowledged the land on which we gather is within the traditional territory of the Tse’khene People of the McLeod Lake Indian Band.

Ed Lepp, Owner of Fry Daddy's, spoke in regard to the Concession Lease Agreement - Amendment Council report on this evening's agenda with concerns over the additional rent amount of $200 for the extra rental space. 

Shannon Bezo, resident, mentioned she was interested in Council discussing items 7.2.3 and 7.2.5 on the agenda. Ms. Bezo also inquired if local Mackenzie employees would be hired for the Arena Slab and Energy Upgrades Project, item 8.9 on the agenda. 

Ron Kenyon, resident, appeared as a delegation to discuss his letter regarding cul-de-sac parking in Mackenzie with Mayor and Council.

Request received from CN Rail to proclaim September 18-24, 2023 as Rail Safety Week.

    WHEREAS Rail Safety Week is to be held across Canada from September 18 to 24, 2023;

    WHEREAS, 232 railway crossing and trespassing incidents occurred in Canada in 2022; resulting in 66 avoidable fatalities and 43 avoidable serious injuries;

    WHEREAS, educating and informing the public about rail safety (reminding the public that railway rights-of-way are private property, enhancing public awareness of the dangers associated with highway rail grade crossings, ensuring public awareness of the dangers associated with highway rail grade crossings, ensuring pedestrians and motorists are looking and listening while near railways, and obeying established traffic laws) will reduce the number of avoidable fatalities and injuries caused by incidents involving trains and citizens; and

    Whereas Operation Lifesaver is a public/private partnership whose aim is to work with the public, rail industry, governments, police services, media and others to raise rail safety awareness,

    Whereas CN has requested City Council adopt this resolution in support of its ongoing efforts to raise awareness, save lives and prevent injuries in communities, including our municipality;

    It is hereby RESOLVED to support national Rail Safety Week to be held from September 18 to 24, 2023.

    WHEREAS on October 1, 2023 communities across Canada will join together to recognize National Seniors Day; and

    WHEREAS on October 1, 2023 is recognized as the International Day of Older Persons; and

    WHEREAS National Seniors Day focuses on celebrating and recognizing the contributions made by seniors to better their communities, families and workplaces; and

    WHEREAS seniors in the District of Mackenzie are present in all aspects of our lives: they are our parents, grandparents, our teachers, our volunteers, our mentors, our neighbours and our coworkers; and

    WHEREAS every day, seniors right here in the District of Mackenzie, make a big difference and we value what they are doing;

    NOW, THEREFORE, be it resolved that I, Joan Atkinson, Mayor of Mackenzie, do hereby proclaim that September 24th to October 1st, 2023 to be observed as "Mackenzie Seniors' Week" in the District of Mackenzie, and I urge my fellow citizens to recognize the crucial role played by older Canadians in our community.

Shannon Bezo, resident, thanked Council for discussing the items in "For Consideration." Ms. Bezo asked when the UBCM convention is being held? Mayor Atkinson replied that it is September 18-22 and Councillor Hipkiss, Brumovsky as well as herself would be attending the convention. Ms. Bezo asked if the public would receive an update after the convention of motions passed? Mayor Atkinson replied that one can certainly be brought forward. 

Ms. Bezo advised that the Mackenzie Legion is currently storing the gymnastic equipment at the CNC Trade Building and asked for any support to assist the Legion in purchasing the sea-can that will be housed on their property.
